Refrigerator Thoughts

Lets take a moment to talk about refrigeration. It’s been on my mind a lot lately. When we bought our place it came with a late 1970’s refrigerator that was in decent enough shape to keep, but we definitely weren’t in love with it, we just didn’t have the budget to buy a new one since we had to get a new stove and dishwasher among  other things. So we decided to do a mini makeover on the fridge and paint it a fun colour. You can read more about that process here. About a year later, the paint is […]

Recipe Adventure: Carrot Cake

It’s been top secret for years, but I’ve decided to share my no fail, all flavour, super moist Carrot Cake recipe. This is my go-to recipe for family gatherings and tea parties. This carrot cake has tons of texture, lots of carrot and plenty of nuts, raisins and spices. The best part is the delicious crust that forms on the outside, perfect to eat plain on it’s own, but even more delicious to load on a luxurious layer of fresh whipped cream cheese frosting. Yum! Ingredients 4 eggs 1/2 cup butter 2 cups brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups flour […]

Wood Railing Nightmare

When we moved into our place a year ago, we realized we had a lot of small projects ahead of us, sanding, paintings, patching etc…  and this was after the major renovation had been completed. We’ve finished almost all of them except one major thing that keeps staring us right in the face. The wood railings upstairs. You can see it from almost every angle in the apartment, it’s the same ugly red stain that the stairs were, but it can’t be removed to sand in a tent like we did for the stairs. Since our space is all open, the […]

Loft Stairs Before and After

So it’s August 2nd and it’s shocking to think that this time last year we got the keys to our place and began our renovations. We’re so happy with the apartment that i’ve totally forgotten to keep my blog updated with renovation photos. That and every time I think to take “after” photos, it’s too dark. The stuff I’m about to share with you is even a bit out dated, since then we’ve put up art on the walls and de-cluttered a ton. Anyway, this may be a year late, but hey…better late than never I suppose. The loft stairs […]

Recipe Adventure: Meyer Lemon Sorbet

By Nicole & Andrew We spotted Meyer Lemons on sale at the produce store and this never happens, so naturally we thought “let’s make sorbet!” And I may have also had lemons on the brain from hearing all about It’s To Die For Lemon Loaf by Erin Ireland. Ingredients: 8-10 Meyer Lemons (approx. 2 cups juice) 3/4 cups water 1/2 cup sugar Zest of 2 Meyer Lemons (less if you don’t like it tart) Method: Squeeze the lemons. You can strain the juice to remove pulp, but we like the texture, but don’t forget to remove the seeds. In a sauce pan combine water and […]

Ceiling Fan

We’ve been living in our loft for about 7 months now, I can’t believe how time flies! We only have a few things left on our list for renovation/fixing up: Replace ceiling fan Install a pendant light fixture in the entrance Replace all switches and plugs Refinish the upstairs railings Storage for the bedroom Storage for the living room Make a bathtub bench/tray This past weekend we got our hands on a very tall ladder and Andrew climbed up 18ft in the air to replace the nasty 80s ceiling fan that was half falling down and very noisy. This fan […]

Upstairs Bathroom Renovation Complete

The upstairs bathroom is finally finished! Although these photos are not really up to date, they don’t include what we ended up doing with the corner shelf in the shower to cover the pipe. I’ll probably do a single post about this to explain in detail what we did to avoid cutting into the main water line and moving it. I previously posted about the progress of this room, but a lot has changed since then. The bathroom took a while to finish because we were waiting for our counter top to arrive. We got a reclaimed piece of fir […]

The Library

When we first viewed our apartment we knew the nook in the corner by the window was meant to be a floor to ceiling library, that and Andrew has a lot of books, so they had to go somewhere and look nice while being there. The previous owners just had a few floating shelves that were installed really badly with ugly brackets. It just didn’t have the impact that the wall should of had. The ceilings are over 16ft, so in order to reach the books near the top, we’re going to need a ladder. Luckily each floor in our […]

Upstairs Bathroom

The upstairs bathroom is a bit of a nightmare. The previous tenants installed a steam shower where a closet once existed. in this closet there was the water heater and some electrical as well as 2 sprinklers and the water shut off for the suite. We took down the dividing wall between the toilet and the steam shower to create a full bathroom. Unfortunately we aren’t able to move the sprinklers or the water shut off valve, so we’ll have to work around it. If we did move them, we’d have to discuss it with our strata council wait for […]

Kitchen Cabinets

411-reno-kitchen1b

The original kitchen was not functional at all. All of the appliances and cabinet doors opened up onto each other creating complete chaos. We ripped out the 80’s bar area and removed the full height cabinets to allow for a more open space. We salvaged old cabinets and figured out a way to fit them into the space. Well actually we hired contractors to do this because we have no clue what we’re doing when it comes to that stuff 🙂 We’ll need to remove the veneer on the outside of some cabinets and replace it with white and then […]
