Decorating Naturally with UncommonGoods

I’ve been changing up my decorating style over the last few years, removing colour and moving towards natural elements like wood and textured fabrics. Since I live in an open plan loft apartment having too much colour can feel busy, including more natural elements creates a sense of calmness.

I got excited when I discovered UncommonGoods after they reached out to me to select some of my favourite items from their website.

If you don’t already know, UncommonGoods is an online shop where you can find sustainable, recycled and organic products. They work with artists and small manufacturers to provide consumers with unique and well made products, their company mission is really awesome, you can read their full mission statement and learn more about them by clicking this link.

I’ve shopped their website and picked out some of my favourite items to add natural design elements to your home, they have so many items made with wood! Check it out:Read More »Decorating Naturally with UncommonGoods

Why I Dislike My Gas Range

I decided to write about my gas range after having a few recent conversations with people helping them decide if they should go electric or gas. I used to be all about electric only because it’s what I grew up with and I had a mild fear about using gas, but when we moved into our place over 3 years ago, the gas bill was included in our strata fees and the gas line was already there, so it was a no-brainer to go with a gas range. I immediately got over my fear and now I’ll never go back.

Since we had a limited time to complete our renovations and a very limited budget, we picked our appliances pretty quickly and our gas range was one of the more affordable Maytag ranges and right from the beginning there were problems. The seal around the door has never been installed correctly even after they came for a service call.

Then after a few months the grate that’s on the top of the stove corroded, not just a little bit, but a lot. It was so shocking it made me completely regret purchasing this stove. After a few weeks of trying to get in touch with Maytag, they said they’d send me a replacement grate, but in the end they only sent me half instead of the full 2 pieces. It’s so incredibly ugly and impossible to clean now.

Here’s the corroded mess:

The Pros and Cons of Loft Living

Over 3 years ago Andrew and I made the plunge to move in together and move into a loft apartment. It was all very exciting and new. It was also pretty stressful because we did a super rushed renovation before we moved in and I’ll tell you right now, never rush a renovation. The only reason we rushed ours was because of timing and we had the resources because my family works in the renovation business.

Our space is 1,100 sqft with the bedroom and one of the bathrooms upstairs. The ground floor has a kitchen/living room space and a small bathroom. Here’s the floor plan, it’s since changed a bit, but it’ll give you an idea of the space we’re living in.

After a year, we finally felt settled in, but I started to notice some pros and cons of loft living. I’ll start off by saying I love my loft, I love the lifestyle, but there are some things I really had to adjust to, so I thought I’d share them with you incase you’re thinking of moving into one.Read More »The Pros and Cons of Loft Living
