Front Door Hardware

Modern front door hardware by Emtek from Bradford Hardware

We’ve lived in our apartment for almost 4 years and when we moved in we said we’d change the front door hardware, but never really got around to it until now. We did a mini front door makeover by painting the door and replacing the numbers for something more modern, you can check that out here. The door really became an issue for me a few years ago when I locked myself out of our apartment because the middle lock in the photo below was set in the lock position from the inside and I wasn’t aware of it. When […]

The Pros and Cons of Loft Living

loft apartment office

Over 3 years ago Andrew and I made the plunge to move in together and move into a loft apartment. It was all very exciting and new. It was also pretty stressful because we did a super rushed renovation before we moved in and I’ll tell you right now, never rush a renovation. The only reason we rushed ours was because of timing and we had the resources because my family works in the renovation business. Our space is 1,100 sqft with the bedroom and one of the bathrooms upstairs. The ground floor has a kitchen/living room space and a small […]

Our Loft Apartment is Featured on Design*Sponge

loft apartment library ladder

Exciting news! Our loft apartment is featured on Design*Sponge. The last few weeks I’ve been taking photos of our place, learning very quickly that interior photography is damn hard! I shared some of my initial shots in a few blog posts, but then went back and took more photos for the feature when I realized there were things I wanted to change. Looking back at all the photos now, there’s still things I want to change, but I think that’s the beauty of a home, always changing and moving things around to suit your mood (at least that’s what happens at […]

Loft Kitchen Update

loft kitchen renovation

I’ve posted a few photos of our loft kitchen before, but it’s been a while and thought I’d share an update, because I’m the type of person that likes to constantly move things around. We recently bought a larger stainless steel island and luckily we were able to sell the old one the same day! We upgraded to a large one, because we had the space and we really needed the extra storage underneath for our pots and pans and the extra counter space is pretty awesome. Before I get into the photos, here’s a link to a previous post, showing the […]

Loft Bedroom Before and After

loft bedroom before and after

It occurred to me that I haven’t done any recent posts of our apartment. We’ve lived here for a couple of years now and things are finally feeling settled. After initial renovations and minor tweaks along the way, I’d say things are pretty much where we want them. There will always be things we want to update or change, but those projects will get done eventually and when our budget allows for it. Today I’m sharing the loft bedroom. I haven’t posted anything about this space because whenever I think to take a photo it’s far too dark or messy, plus […]

Medicine Cabinet Mini Makeover

When we got our place about 2 years ago we installed 2 medicine cabinets, one was new and the other was upcycled from an old Ikea cabinet that was left in the apartment by the previous home owners. We had the renovation crew cut a whole to fit the cabinet in the wall and put the cabinet in place. A door was cut from MDF and ever since then it was left that way. I never got around to updating it and finishing it until recently. Check out the big hole in the wall during construction and the way it […]

Polished Concrete Floors

polished concrete floor - after

As soon as we got the keys to our place we got to work by quickly ripping out the laminate wood floors and selling them on craigslist (surprisingly they sold within a few hours). The floor was about 80% salvageable, there were a few places with water damage and wear from bad installation. Luckily they were just floating floors so they came up really easily. We were crossing our fingers that the concrete floor underneath would be in perfect condition, natural grey and sealed. Oh boy were we wrong…. It was ugly, really ugly. They had painted brown diamonds on […]

Apartment Entrance Before and After

The entrance to our apartment was kind of depressing. Peel and stick vinyl tiles were placed just in the entrance area and they were the biggest pain in the butt to remove. It was like they stuck them down with super glue, but eventually they were removed (by some contractors we hired). We kept the concrete floor throughout our entire space and put down some rugs to keep things cozy. It’s mostly the little things that make me happy about the current state of this space, as it’s still a work in progress. Here’s some before photos: In the entrance […]

Upstairs Bathroom Renovation: Before and After

As promised here’s some updated photos of our upstairs bathroom renovation. But first, check out these before photos. The upstairs bathroom was interesting…. The previous owners had installed a “steam shower” which wasn’t installed properly so technically someone could have been electrocuted while having a shower. Not cool! Personally I’d probably die from having to look at the ugly tiles while showering. The tiny shower area was divided by a wall which had the toilet and vanity on the other side. This space is tiny! I’m not sure why they thought it would be smart to make them into 2 […]

Downstairs Bathroom Renovation Update

I thought it was time to take a few new photos of our bathrooms. This post will just be about the downstairs bathroom renovation, look out for a post about the upstairs bathroom soon! Even though our renovation was over a year ago, things are still not perfect, but the renovation is done and it’s generally pretty, I just keep fussing over accessories (although I’ll like fuss about that stuff my whole life haha). Also, the fact that I REALLY want to replace the light fixture. We put in a cheap Ikea fixture as soon as the reno was done, it […]

Vintage Library Ladder

A while back I posted about our library, it’s been over year without a ladder, luckily there’s ladders we can borrow from the building and if we need to reach the very top we use BBQ tongs haha! Of course we really want a ladder of our own, but they’re hard to come by and kind of expensive. Every week i’d check on craigslist for library ladders, most were over priced, too short, not in good condition. We found one at an auction a few months ago, but it was way too pricey and really short. The other week it […]
